Viliami Takau wants cruise ship passengers to reconnect with nature and discover different cultures
Viliami Takau, CEO for the Tonga Ministry of Tourism, is the new chairman of the South Pacific Cruise Alliance.

The Alliance, founded in 2011, represents 10 South Pacific islands, states and territories — American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga, New Caledonia, Pitcairn, Samoa, French Polynesia, Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna.

It engages with the Australian Cruise Association, the New Zealand Cruise Association, Cruise Lines International Association Australasia and the Pacific Tourism Organisation to optimise cruise operations and itineraries in the South Pacific.

It teams up with the Pacific Tourism Organisation to showcase the region at Seatrade Cruise Global.

Takau is an advocate of the ‘Pacific way’ of cruising, which entails a reconnection with unspoilt nature and the discovery of different cultures.

Pandemic recovery

The region has recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, with 2023 figures exceeding 2019.

‘We are causing a stir,’ outgoing chairman Bud Gilroy, president of the Tahiti Cruise Club, said.

‘Crews, managers and passengers are falling in love with our islands, our way of life and our people,’ Gilroy said.

‘The regional forum dedicated to cruises that we organised in Tahiti in October 2023 clearly demonstrated the potential of maritime tourism for our territories and cultures.’
